Coheed and Cambria maintain their pace following concert series, Neverender, with a 2009 tour opening for Slipknot. Frontman Claudio Sanchez talks new album, future

The singular vision of Coheed and Cambria has been propelled by its frontman Claudio Sanchez since his first trip to Paris, France as a teenager. The story that encompasses the band's four albums has grown from song to graphic novels, comic books, and spawning many a website seeking to mine Sanchez's lyrics for their meaning and the unraveling of its sci-fi epic.

That the band is busy goes as understatement. Rocked by turmoil and a near breakup heading into the writing and recording of 2007's No World For Tomorrow, the band has rebounded, mounting successful world tours, culminating in 2008's Neverender; a multi-date prog-rockapolooza featuring the band's entire unabridged catalog. The CD/DVD boxed set of these shows was just released on March 24th with the band coming off yet another arena-sized tour, this time in support of Slipknot.

The Neverender Boxed Set

The gem of this purchase seems to be the live DVD collection that's included along with the four disc audio set that covers the band's run of Neverender in their home state of New York. The DVD allows the Coheed fan that may not have been able to catch a live show up until this point, a blow-for-blow view into the fervor and sing along faithfulness. Played to packed houses every night, the band looks and sounds legitimately engaged with their material in a fresh sans pretension sort of way.

Key Tracks: Devil in Jersey City, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3.

The Slipknot Tour and Beyond

When asked about the tour with Slipknot, wordsmith and Gibson Explorer pilot Claudio Sanchez said to Natalie Zfat writing for Rolling Stone's "Rock&Roll Daily" in February 2009, "There's nights when we stick out like a sore thumb." The crowds for those shows don't seem too Coheed friendly, though the band does have experience in touring with harder sounding acts like Avenged Sevenfold, who's fans are also just as likely to steal someone's souvenir T-shirt money.

A next step for Coheed and Cambria appears to be a fifth album which Sanchez has noted will served as the prequel record to the band's first four. “It’s a love story of sacrifice,” he said in the same interview with Zfat,“Like all of the Coheed records, our main character, the Creator, is put in a position where he has to do something he doesn’t want to for the safety of his wife. I got engaged last year, so I’ve tried to put myself into the character’s perspective, wondering what it would be like for me if I were to lose my significant other. And how that would destroy me.”

The next chance to catch Coheed and Cambria will be a performance at The House Blues, Atlantic City on May 28th
